Simplest Way to Test IR LED - Including IR Emitter and IR Receiver LED

Infrared LEDs are not the same as conventional LEDs, although their appearance is exactly the same.

And the normal human eye will not be able to see the light emitted by the infrared LED.

Therefore, it will be difficult to check if an infrared LED is good or broken.

Today, I will show you the simplest way to test IR LED, including IR emitter and IR receiver LED.

Step 1: Check the Emitting IR LED

To test IR LED emitter:

- Switch mode on multimeter to diode measurement.

- Connect the red probe to the positive pin of the LED (Longer pin)

- Connect the black probe to the negative pin of the LED (shorter pin)

CHECK VALUE ON SCREEN

If you see the value on the display of the multimeter change.
This means the LED emitter is still working fine

Step 2: Check Receiver Infrared Led

To test the receiver infrared LED.

- Switch the mode on the multimeter to the resistance measurement mode (Ohm)

- Connect the red probe to the positive pin of the LED (Longer pin)

- Connect the black probe to the negative pin of the LED (shorter pin)

CHECK VALUE ON SCREEN

Use an infrared remote control such as: TV remote, air conditioner control... to make a light transmitter.

If when you press the remote control, and the value on the multimeter's screen changes suddenly. That means the LED receiver still picks up the signal from the remote control, and it still works fine.

Conversely, if nothing happens when you press the remote control, then this LED receiver is damaged and you need to replace it.

That all, good luck!
